7, 2003: ANNUAL
REPORT TO USJF Greetings to everyone:
I am pleased to
report that we have awarded the first George Balch Education scholarship. With
the committee’s unique emphasis on helping to fund a potential leader
in judo, rather than a competitor, this scholarship program could have a long
lasting impact on judo. Thanks to many
donor’s we have accumulated a total of $17,111.00 in contributions (through
September, 2003) and more is still coming in to the National Office. The
committee will be soliciting contributions from former donors and new
possibilities in order to build this fund to a respectable level. I am sorry to
report that the fund has not reached the potential to support more candidates.
However this year’s recipient is Michael Oshima and we expect him to
provide many years off service to the United States Judo Federation and
US judo in general. Michael received an award of $500.00 from the George Balch
Scholarship Committee. Michael plans on
attending Tokai University this year then switching to Harvard University in
2004,Michael hails from Somerville, Massachusetts. His goal is to teach at the
University level. We wish him the greatest
success and thank him and the other fine applicants for their efforts.
